Additional Information

Many occupational health nurses lack the knowledge necessary to deliver culturally competent care for LGBTQ-identified employees in the workforce. To meet the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer clients, we nurses need to recognize the areas of health care delivery where sensitivity, privacy, and diversity are applicable. Come to this dinner lecture and you will leave understanding the key concepts of gender identity and sexual orientation diversity that you can use in your work environment. The educational objectives are attached.

Our speaker is Joshua Riley, Licenced Professional Counselor, who is the Director of Community Committment at the Whitman-Walker Clinic.  His fantastic Bio is attached.

This is the first lecture in a series of 2: In late October - October 19th or 20th, we're still ironing out the dates- we will have part 2 of this series. That lecture will be on the hands-on aspects of nursing care of LGBTQ patients and will be taught by a physician from the Whitman Walker clinic.

There is a limit to attendance size: The Whitman Walker Clinic has generously offered their conference room to us. It only has space for 25 - 30 people. So please register immediately to secure a spot: we will close registration off when we reach 30 people.

Cost is $ 10 for non-AAOHN members, $ 5 for AAOHN members, payable at the door by cash or check.

The location of this clinic is going to be difficult for parking: There is street parking with very expensive meters and there is one parking lot at the corner of 14th and S which is $ 20 in the evening, and cash only. Looking on line you see several garages listed but a walk-around on 9/5/16 revealed only this one lot within a 7 block radius. There is a Trader Joe's and a Whole Foods but if you exceed the 90 minute limit, you will get a $ 250 ticket: yikes! So, get your urban groove on and take the Metro or the bus. The circulator passes right in front of the clinic, as does metrobus. The closest metro stop is U St/African American Civil War Memorial Museum (Green/Yellow line.) Walking directions from there are: walk South on 13th street towards lower letters of the alphabet. When you reach Q street, turn Right and walk 1 block to 14th street (Le Diplomate restaurant will be on the corner.) Turn left and walk 1/2 block to the Whitman Walker clinic. There are two entrances: one is the pharmacy entrance - do not enter there. Enter at the main clinic entrance. Signage will direct you to the conference room. Don't use the Shaw/Howard University stop: it's 11 blocks away. The red line user can get off at Dupont Circle Q street exit and walk 6 blocks due east on Q street until they get to 14th. Cross 14th street to the East side, turn left, and the Whitman Walker Building is on your right at mid-block.
